AlphaTauri will retain Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda for 2022. Tsunoda expressed his surprise because he has had mixed form and was afraid he was costing the team too much money. Team boss Franz Tost thinks he deserves more time as a rookie, but admits to looking at other options.

According to the Austrian, there is no point in attracting a driver and then showing him the door again so soon. "A driver needs three years to learn to understand Formula 1," Tost said in conversation with Sport1. "Yuki has potential and is still learning. He is very critical of himself and that is positive."

Alternatives for AlphaTauri and Red Bull

That's not to say that there are no alternatives. "We have good drivers in Formula 2,Tost continued. "For us they are Liam Lawson and Juri Vips, who will also participate in the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi. Lawson will do so with us and Vips with Red Bull Racing."

"Formula 2 is busy this year: Oscar Piastri, Theo Pourchaire, Robert Shwartzman and our two junior drivers are undoubtedly the drivers of the future," concluded Tost.
