The chance that we will see two Dutchmen in Formula 1 next year was already small, but thanks to the announcement of Aston Martin it has now become even smaller.

Recently, another option for Nyck de Vries seemed to have opened up besides Alfa Romeo: Toto Wolff said he was looking at what Sebastian Vettel would do before possibly bringing De Vries to Aston Martin. However, the Mercedes team boss also indicated that he would like to keep the driver in Formula E, as long as Mercedes remains active in the class.

Chances for De Vries are getting smaller

That chance has now gone, however, as Aston Martin has announced that it wants to continue with both of its current drivers. There is now only one option left for De Vries: the second seat alongside Valtteri Bottas at Alfa Romeo. But what are the odds?

Multiple contenders for Alfa Romeo seat

Alfa Romeo team principal Frederic Vasseur says he is waiting for the results of the Formula 2 championship. There are several drivers who could potentially win a Formula 1 seat, with Guanyu Zhou the most likely candidate.

Besides that Antonio Givionazzi is not doing bad at the moment, so there is a good chance that the team will go for the safe option and keep the Italian. Add to that the fact that Mercedes prefers to keep De Vries in Formula E in 2022, his chances of winning Formula 1 seem a lot smaller than they were a few weeks ago.
