Gasly: 'I could not have hoped for anything better'
- Cameron Smith
Pierre Gasly equalled his best ever Formula 1 qualifying session after he finished Q3 at the Baku City Circuit in fourth place. His time of 1:41.565 was just 0.003 seconds behind Max Verstappen in P3, but the Frenchman was extremely happy with his performance.
Speaking to SkySports, he revealed: "It's been a fantastic day I must say. I could not have hoped for anything better. First in FP3, fourth in qualifying fighting for pole with the Ferrari and Mercedes and Red Bull which is something that has never really happened to us.
"All weekend's we have been surprisingly strong. I felt super good in the car and managed to push it to the limit. Happy! Didn't miss much to jump Max for P3. We delivered a strong qualifying especially considering we focused a bit more on the race."
All about Sunday
In fact, Gasly beat Sergio Perez in the Red Bull and Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes in the qualifying session, and he'll be hoping that he can stay ahead of those cars in the race on Sunday. "We kept two sets of hard tyres for the race which gave us only four sets of for quail compared to the others. I think we are in a good position."
