Before Nikita Mazepin could even get in a Haas car, his position within the team was already under fire. The Russian, who will make his F1 debut next year, published a video on Instagram that drew a lot of criticism from the F1 world. He did not say too much about it himself but now opens up about the incident in conversation with ESPN.
"My actions in December were completely wrong. I take full responsibility for that. It was a big learning moment and I can confidently say that I am now a lot further on in how I behave, so there is a little bit of positivity there."
Mazepin wants to show his qualities
Since the incident, the hashtag #WeSayNoToMazepin has been created by F1 fans, who want to see the Russian removed from his position at Haas. "I totally understand that they are reacting on feelings and that I was not right with my actions. I am not proud of it and that is important to develop."
The Russian is looking forward to proving himself on the track. "The people I've been with over the years know who I am. I will still be myself off the track as well. I think on the track you have to prove yourself. I do think I am a fast driver. I'm also really looking forward to proving myself to people who don't really like me at all. Hopefully I can change their opinion of me," Mazepin concluded.
