Haas to sacrifice entire 2021 for 2022: 'Can live with last place'
- GPblog.com
Haas has made a rigorous decision for 2021. There will be no more aerodynamic updates in 2021 for the American team, which has been focused on the new regulations for 2022 since January.
The 2021 season has yet to begin, but Haas has decided to set its sights on 2022. This will probably be at the expense of the 2021 season, but Günther Steiner accepts that. From January onwards they could start working on the new regulations again, and with the bugdet cap the team has to make a choice.
Haas sacrifices 2021
''Yes, there is a risk that we will finish at the bottom in 2021, but we can live with that. We are looking at the long term. If you only look at the short term, you will be behind in 2022 and you won't be able to catch up. With the restrictions on aerodynamics and the budget cap, it is best to spend as much time as possible on those rules now,'' Steiner told Motorsport.com.
Steiner therefore understands that it will be a difficult challenge for the team, but also for its young drivers in 2021. ''We are preparing ourselves for that. We have to limit the damage. It would be a success for me if we can prepare two drivers for the future, so that in '22 we don't have any more problems. They (Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher) will learn from this and it is also a good opportunity for them, because with a bad car the expectations are lower than with a good one'', concludes the Haas team boss.
