Verstappen doesn't expect to keep up with Ferrari in qualifying

Max Verstappen may have finished second in FP2 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez but the Red Bull driver has conceded that Ferrari are just too quick to compete with them in qualifying on Saturday.

After Lewis Hamilton topped FP1 on Friday afternoon, Sebastian Vettel put in a dominant display to top the timesheets in FP2, with Verstappen a 0.115 behind. Charles Leclerc finished one place further back whilst Mercedes could only manage fourth and fifth.

Verstappen has won the last two editions of the Mexican Grand Prix but faces stiff competition with Ferrari seemingly a level above the rest of the field.

Despite splitting the Ferrari pair, Verstappen doesn't expect to be able to compete with them come qualifying.

"I don't think we can compete with them in qualifying," Verstappen told the media in Mexico.

"They are just too fast. We are getting close, but we cannot make enough time in the turns.

“We just have to focus on the race so that we can keep the tires under control. At first it was good, but in the end everyone ran into problems.
