Renault have been using illegal braking for years!
Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul has revealed the team have been using their illegal braking system for years. This comes after the team were disqualified from the Japanese Grand Prix and didn't appeal the decision.
The Renault pair of Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth and tenth respectively but following Racing Point's decision to raise an issue with their braking system, both have been disqualified from the race at the Suzuka circuit.
In the next turn in this bizarre saga, Cyril Abiteboul has revealed the system has been used for years and he wasn't expecting to be pulled up on it.
"I don't want to go into the details, but it's not from this season, it's from before," said as quoted by Motorsport Week.
"It's been used for so many years that we never thought it could be put into question until what happened recently."
"It's a driver aid, just like as we said before a number of things are driver aids. I'll give you one, energy deployment. It's all lap distance based. At some point you need to accept that there's an element of subjectivity."
