Red Bull's Pierre Gasly has explained why he was told by team boss Christian Horner to move aside for Max Verstappen in Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Gasly had perhaps his strongest race of the season at Silverstone, topping FP1 and qualifying ahead of Sebastian Vettel in P5.

Verstappen was called in the pits when the safety car was called up after Antonio Giovinazzi spun onto the gravel, allowing Gasly to go through ahead of the Dutchman, but both behind Vettel.

The pair were set to chase the Ferrari for the last spot on the podium, but with Gasly falling away from Vettel, he was ordered to let Verstappen past.

According to RaceFans.net, Gasly said: “It was a different strategy and we thought it would be probably better for the bigger picture.

“Maybe we lost a bit of time there, it could have been a bit different but it was not massive. We were on different strategies.”

These are the radio messages between the team and Gasly:

Red Bull: 'Remember we’re different strategies. Don’t hold Max up, we’re on different strategies.

'Don’t lose time with Max, let him go if he tries, follow him after Vettel.

'Let’s not hold Max up, Pierre, don’t hold Max up.'

Gasly: 'I’m not holding him.'

Horner: 'Pierre, it’s Christian, you need to let Max go, you’re on a different strategy.'
