The second free practice session for the Formula 1 2024 Singapore Grand Prix is about to take place. Because the start time is the same as qualifying and closest to the Grand Prix, this is the most representative practice session of the weekend for the F1 teams and drivers. Will Max Verstappen and Red Bull have similar issues to 2023 in Singapore? Will Lando Norris and McLaren hit the ground running? And will Ferrari and Mercedes be competitive?

The Singapore Grand Prix weekend
After a hectic Grand Prix in Baku last time out, there will be a lot to watch out for. McLaren took the lead in the constructors' championship thanks to Oscar Piastri's win. And, despite starting in P15, Lando Norris was able to cut the deficit to Max Verstappen to 59 points in the drivers' championship. However, lots of talk has been had about McLaren and their 'flexi-wing' on the rear of the car, so attention will be on that too.
Red Bull will be looking to retake the lead in the constructors' championship, but last year's Singapore Grand Prix was one to forget, so they will be hoping for major improvements. Ferrari and Mercedes will also be looking to find some pace, especially the Prancing Horse, who have had a lot of success on the street circuits this year, including a dominant win for Charles Leclerc at Monaco.
In the week after Baku, large focus was put on McLaren's rear wing. The FIA has confirmed that they are legal. The rear wing was moving slightly down the straights, giving a DRS that was effective without being active.
After the Singapore Grand Prix, Formula 1 enters a three-week gap. Unlike the summer break, teams can work on their cars ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Red Bull expects to be much stronger in Austin, while McLaren has also hinted at some upgrades. After Singapore, just six Grands Prix weekends will remain in 2024. Three of which will be sprints.
