Toto Wolff has been the face of Mercedes as team boss for years, but who replaces the 51-year-old Austrian when he is absent? Wolff answered that question at the French magazine AutoHebdo.

"If I am absent from a Grand Prix, Jérôme [d'Ambrosio] will take my place," said Wolff, who has only skipped a Grand Prix three times in the past 11 years. Wolff continued: "It's a situation you have to be able to anticipate." D'Ambrosio has had a formal role at the German racing stable since the beginning of this season, leading the talent programme there.

D'Ambrosio was himself team boss at Venturi for a while in Formula E, so he already has the necessary experience of leading a team. Venturi is a lot smaller than Mercedes, but Wolff sees potential. "He is committed, and I have to say that half of what he says makes sense at Grands Prix. James Allison (technical director, ed.) has often told me that I say 50% intelligent things and 50% stupid things," he laughs.

D'Ambrosio needs time

The 37-year-old Belgian, who has 20 races in Formula 1 behind his name, is going to be brought quietly by Mercedes. "We need to give him more time, but my impression is that he has the right profile to take on this role. He now needs to gain credibility within the team and in the paddock. He still has plenty of time, but if I am absent, he can take over," Wolff concluded.
