Charles Leclerc had to retire from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Monegasque suffered engine problems within 20 laps, which prevented him from continuing his race.

Leclerc was allowed to start the race from pole position, but already on the first lap had to deal with the qualities of Sergio Perez. The Mexican saw a gap and decided to go for his chance, after which Perez immediately took the lead. Leclerc still managed to hold on to his second spot, keeping Verstappen behind him.

After Carlos Sainz crashed out Ferrari decided to bring Leclerc in and change the strategy. It resulted in Perez and Verstappen jointly leading and moving further away from Leclerc.
