On the eve of the 24 Hours of Daytona, the Mazda MX5 Cup was run as one of several support races. However, things immediately went wrong at the start of the second race.
Megacrash leads to huge chaos at Daytona
Not even a second into the race, things were already going wrong: two cars at the front of the field hit each other, causing a chain reaction. Much of the field then got involved in the mega-crash, which was reminiscent of scenes from a NASCAR race.
A third of all participants were unable to continue. Despite the huge crash, a red flag was not deemed necessary. Instead, the drivers were led through the pit lane while the huge havoc was cleared. The race was eventually won by Jared Thomas, who crossed the finish line just 0.038 seconds ahead of Todd Buras.
