GPDA chairman reacts to Verstappen's "stupid idiots" comment
The Grand Prix Drivers' Association President Alexander Wurz expected "something more to come" from the incident between Max Verstappen and the stewards at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix . The Dutchman was handed a ten-second time penalty after causing a collision with Oscar Piastri at turn 1, and after he served that, he branded them "stupid idiots", once again casting the FIA in bad light.
The GPDA is the drivers' union, a union that brings together the 20 Formula 1 drivers on the grid. Former driver Alex Wurz is its president, and he had expected "something more to come" after Verstappen's sarcastic remark, knowing that the comments made by the 27-year-old were a little bit on the edge.
Wurz happy with the FIA's approach
However, there was no investigation, and therefore no punishment for the Red Bull Racing driver after the incident: "Normally I would expect the stewards or maybe the FIA president to just pick up the phone and talk to Max themselves. Max is really easy to talk to. You have to give him time and then he will start talking to you. At the end of the day, he does want to do the right thing."
The 50-year-old Wurz - himself taking part in 67 races in Formula 1 - continued, " On the one hand, we want to see authentic sport and get to know the drivers. They have to show themselves as they are. That's cool That's good. That's what we want. Of course, we also have a social responsibility because people, children, are watching at home or roughness just right ," said the Austrian.
Verstappen does still have to perform his 'community service' though. The FIA announced this week that Verstappen will do some work in Rwanda as part of a development program run by the Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC). For this so-called grassroots development program, the four-time world champion will mainly do work with children.
