Italian engineer Andrea Stella worked for a long time as a performance engineer and race engineer at Ferrari but switched to McLaren in 2015. He was promoted to team boss at the end of 2022 after it was announced that Andreas Seidl would leave for Alfa Romeo in 2023.

Flying start at Ferrari

Stella graduated in aerospace engineering from La Sapienza University in Rome. In 2000 he completed a PhD in mechanical engineering with an experimental study on the fluid dynamics of flames. That was impressive enough on his CV that he started working for Ferrari's test team that same year.

In 2002 he was promoted to Ferrari's Formula 1 team, where he worked as a performance engineer for Michael Schumacher and then Kimi Raikkonen. In 2007 he became a race engineer, then for Raikkonen. Between 2010 and 2014, he worked as Fernando Alonso's race engineer.

Switch to McLaren

In 2015, Stella left for McLaren, together with Fernando Alonso. Stella joined McLaren in 2015 as Head of Race Operations before becoming Performance Director in 2018 and Racing Director in 2019. In the latter role, he formed a triumvirate with technical director James Key and executive director Piers Thynne, led by team boss Andreas Seidl and CEO Zak Brown.

Promotion to team principal of McLaren

In December 2022, it was announced that Seidl was leaving McLaren for a role as CEO at Sauber, after which Stella was promoted to team boss of the racing team from Woking. The Italian will lead the team from 2023, which will also welcome a new driver in the person of Oscar Piastri. Together with Lando Norris, he should form a strong line-up.
