In Formula 1's current engine regulations, drivers receive a grid penalty for an extra engine change and this is likely to remain the case in the coming years. The current system is causing discussions among the F1 team bosses.

Drivers are allowed to use three engines per season. When this limit is exceeded a grid penalty follows. Many drivers already had to deal with it this year, including title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Toto Wolff already said that it is not easy to find a solution for the current system. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner sees it differently. According to him the limit of the number of engines per year should be raised. Other team bosses are also involved in the discussion.

Just accept the problems

According to McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl, increasing the number of engines allowed is not the solution. "I understand that all these penalties are not ideal, but I don't see a solution either very honestly. If you decide, for example, that you can use four engines instead of three, everyone will end up with five engines per season because we would just turn up the engine positions", Seidl is quoted on the Dutch branch of Motorsport.com.

"In the end it just shows that all the manufacturers and teams are pushing each other to the limit to such an extent that we are using the technology that we are using at the absolute limit and even pushing it over it. That leads to problems and at the moment we simply have to accept that", says Seidl.
