Former Formula 1 driver Carlos Reutemann has died at the age of 79. He was readmitted to intensive care on 21 June, after having had health problems for some time. On Wednesday it was announced that his condition had seriously deteriorated. A few hours later his death was announced.

Reutemann had been struggling with health problems for a long time

On Wednesday, it was announced that Reutemann's condition was critical. He was struggling with gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney problems, which may have been related to the Argentine's 2017 diagnosis of liver cancer.

A few hours later, his daughter, Cora Reutemann, announced that the former driver had passed away. "Dad left in peace and dignity. He fought like a champion until the end, with a strong and noble heart. I am proud and blessed to have the father I had. I know he will be me every day of my life until we see each other again in the house of the Lord," reads the message on her Twitter page.

The former Formula 1 driver raced 146 Grands Prix between 1972 and 1982, winning 12 of them. He was on the podium 45 times. In 1981 he came one point short of becoming world champion, finishing second behind Nelson Piquet.
