For the first time in seven years there is a real battle for the world title. Mercedes suddenly becomes 'human' too, Alexander Wurz says in conversation with Austria Press Agency, but he doesn't dare put money on a world title for Max Verstappen.

Mercedes also human

Mercedes have been the dominant force in Formula 1 for the past seven years. No team has really managed to attack the Silver Arrows, until this season. In 2021, Red Bull Racing finally has it together, and the RB16B is good enough to win races at different circuits. It creates extra pressure for Mercedes.

''Mercedes has lasted longer than any other team in history, and now they have real competition again. That's obviously nice to see, because then it suddenly becomes human at every level,'' said the president of the drivers' union GPDA.

World title for Verstappen

''We watch the sport because we want to see our heroes who we know so well. However, there comes a point where you want the hero to make a mistake. After all, that's what makes a driver human.''

Despite the lead for Verstappen and Red Bull Racing, Wurz doesn't dare put his money on it. ''I wouldn't even put five euros on it. It could just happen that someone gets the nerves or is unlucky and gets hit by someone else. You always keep that unpredictable factor. If nobody makes a mistake, it will remain exciting until the last race," the Austrian concluded.
