Max Verstappen arrived in Azerbaijan as the frontrunner in the Formula 1 championship. After his victory in Monaco, the Dutchman is on top, and he'll be hoping to hold on to that position after the Baku Grand Prix.

Verstappen has already won a race in 2021 but was still ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the championship. The Briton and his team missed out in Monaco, however, which Red Bull Racing took advantage of. Verstappen won the race, and because of Sergio Perez's fourth place, Verstappen and Red Bull now lead the constructors' and drivers' races.

Verstappen happy with the lead

''It's never easy here. With the long straight, the set-up is always a challenge. The braking zones are a challenge. Mercedes is still ahead of us on normal circuits, but we started the year strongly and we have to keep improving and keep going like this. Then we have a good chance," said Verstappen according to Formule1.nl.

''That we are leading in the World Cup is positive. Although it's nice to be in the lead, it's about where you are after the last race'', concludes the Red Bull driver.
