Indy 500: Many former F1 drivers to win the race
- GPblog.com
On Sunday, the Indy 500 is on the program. 33 drivers will compete for one of the most beautiful prizes in motorsport. GPblog looks back on the winners of the last ten editions of the Indy 500.
The last ten editions had no less than nine different winners. In 2011 it was Dan Wheldon who won the race. For the Brit, it was also his last win in the IndyCar championship. Wheldon died later in the season in an accident at the Las Vegas race.
F1 drivers successful
A year later, Dario Franchitti managed to win the race, while Tony Kanaan and Ryan Hunter-Reay did so in the following years. The Indy 500 is regularly entered by former Formula 1 drivers, and they often do so successfully. Juan Pablo Montoya, for example, managed to win his second Indy 500 in 2015.
The 100th Indy 500 was also won by a former F1 driver: Alexander Rossi crossed the line first in 2016 when he had a substantial lead over the second car. Rossi ran out of fuel at the end of the last lap, but had just enough to finish.
Sato the only one to win it twice in the last ten years
In 2017, we saw an Asian win for the first time and it was once again a former Formula One driver. Takuma Sato, in fact, won the race and did so again in 2020. In 2018 and 2019, it was Will Power and Simon Pagenaud who received victory milk.
