Marko hits back after Wolff threat: 'Do you want a big scandal?'
- GPblog.com
Toto Wolff has made it clear that he is not a fan of the flexible wing of the competitors and that a protest will follow in Baku. Helmut Marko doesn't understand the outcry and doesn't believe the threats.
Marko attacks Mercedes
Mercedes has opened the attack on Red Bull Racing next to the track. According to Mercedes the rear wing of the RB16B moves more than allowed. The FIA also saw this, and therefore introduced new tests from the French Grand Prix onwards. Mercedes finds it strange that this overlap is there now, but Marko doesn't understand this indignation.
''We are changing our wing so that it passes the new tests as required at the time required by the FIA. But that doesn't work until Baku. We can't do that in terms of time because we have to adjust the entire rear end. In Formula 1, it is part of the team that looks closely when the competition has something special about the car. We did that when Mercedes came around the corner with the innovative DAS system last year. The FIA has declared the system illegal, but they were still allowed to use it until the last race. We accepted that. Why doesn't Mercedes now accept that the same thing is done with our rear wing?'' Marko said to F1-insider.com.
Is Mercedes bluffing?
Marko therefore opens the counter-attack on Mercedes. ''We expect that the tests for the front wing will now also be tightened, that's just fair. Because especially the front spoiler of Toto Wolff's team is the biggest wobbly candidate in this area. In any case, there is also potential for protest.'' However, Marko doesn't see it getting to the point where Mercedes actually lodges a protest.
''Mercedes would have to protest against eight cars. Because in addition to us, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Alpine are also affected. Do you really want to do that and cause a major scandal? I do not think so,'' concludes Red Bull's top executive.
