Wolff tries to explain Mercedes bad luck at Monaco: 'Feels like a curse'
- GPblog.com
To say that the weekend in Monaco was not one to write home about for Mercedes could just be the understatement of the season. Not only did the team lose the lead in both the drivers' and constructors' race, but the Silver Arrows also had to see how the team did this to themselves due to a silly mistake during Valtteri Bottas' pit stop. Team boss Toto Wolff is scratching his head looking for an explanation for Mercedes' misfortune.
"In Monaco we are always on the back foot," Wolff began in conversation with RACER. "It seems to be a kind of cursed race track for us. It’s a little bit like When you start on the backfoot and have no grip and no trust in the car, it’s very difficult to recover. ... Overall it was a weekend to forget."
Bottas cursed
Wolff also acknowledges that his driver Bottas has invariably received the biggest share of the misfortune befalling Mercedes. For this, the team boss gives a similar explanation: "Very frustrating for him, because it seems he’s cursed. Valtteri said he saw the aluminum bits fly off in the front.
The Austrian continued: "We need to look, whether it’s a design issue or if we had a catastrophic failure of a few systems. We just machined the whole bolt off, I’ve never seen anything like this, there was no part there anymore.”
