Leclerc qualifies on pole: "It's a shame to finish in the wall"
Charles Leclerc qualified on pole position for his home race, but reports he is worried about his gearbox after his crash on the final lap of qualifying. If Ferrari need to replace his gearbox, they will need to take a grid penalty.
In the wall
The session ended under red flags with Leclerc crashing. This ended any future fast laps from the likes of Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas. In the interview after qualifying, Leclerc admitted he is concerned about a potential grid drop.
"It's a shame to finish in the wall. It doesn't feel the same, but at the same time, I'm incredibly happy with the first timed lap. I have always been very unlucky here. I am worried about the gearbox," Leclerc said in the first interview.
Ferrari are on pole for the first time since Mexico 2019. "The first corner was tricky, I didn't do a great first corner but I nailed the second and third sector. Just very happy to be on pole. But it's tomorrow that we score points. It's a surprise for everyone to be on pole for the race tomorrow," he added.
