Hamilton leads the championship, but is trailing behind in this statistic
- GPblog.com
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are pretty evenly matched, but so far it's Hamilton who is leading the championship by 14 points over the Dutchman and has won three of the four races. However, there is another striking statistic in which Verstappen is well in the lead....
Verstappen leading in key statistic
When it comes to leading a race, Verstappen is proudly on top with 144 laps. This is almost twice as many as Hamilton, who led 75 laps in a race. Following these rivals are Bottas and Perez, who have racked up 19 and 13 laps at the lead respectively.
It's a striking statistic from the point of view of the current standings, but looking back at the races run, it's less surprising. Verstappen lost the lead in both Bahrain and Spain to Hamilton in the closing stages of the race.
On both occasions Mercedes outsmarted Red Bull Racing with their pit stop strategy, allowing the German team to cross the line victorious while Red Bull looked to have victory in their hands. The Austrian team say they have a lot of work to do when it comes to strategy.
Despite having won just one race, Verstappen has actually led the most laps in 2021 He's led over 50% of the races, nearly double the amount that Hamilton has!
