Yuki Tsunoda did not have a good time in Spain. The Japaneseman failed to advance past Q1 in qualifying and his race only lasted six laps when the Honda engine of his AlphaTauri failed.

Cause of Tsunoda's failure

On the Japanese website AS-web, Honda chief Toyoharu Tanabe explained what caused Tsunoda's failure in Spain."We had a problem with the fuel pressure, it suddenly dropped," the Honda F1 technical director said.

After the race, Tsunoda revealed that his rear wheels suddenly locked up, saying "maybe there was a problem with the gearbox." Tanabe agrees with this explanation. "Yes, the gears get stuck then due to the reduced fuel pressure. That's what happens when the engine stops."

Measures at Red Bull and AlphaTauri

The problem did come as a complete surprise, however. "The problem came very suddenly. The engine stopped getting fuel and stopped." Honda will now investigate the exact cause of the loss of fuel pressure. "If it is necessary to take measures with the other cars [from Red Bull and AlphaTauri], we will do that as well."
