Missing out on victory in Spain was a disappointment for Verstappen, who was in the lead for much of the race. He saw the overtaking coming early on, however, when it became clear how much faster Mercedes were, especially on the medium compound.

Mercedes in a better position than everyone thought

After the race, Verstappen explained to Sky Sports how big the difference in speed between the two cars was. "You could see from the speed difference that he passed it easily," says Verstappen. The Barcelona circuit is usually a good track for Mercedes, and again this weekend they still seemed to have a step ahead of Red Bull Racing.

"The only track where they seemed to struggle a little bit was Bahrain, but even there they were more competitive in the race than we thought," he continued. "And from then on they understood the car better and got the balance right, and now they're ahead of us. Especially in the race, they seem to be better than us," Verstappen finished.

Now it remains to be seen if the advantage for Mercedes will last, or if other circuits might suit the Red Bulls better. Verstappen's next chance is in Monaco, where qualifying is perhaps more important than anywhere else.
