While Red Bull Racing were initially seen as the team to beat, Mercedes are back in the lead of the championship. In Imola and Portimao, the Silver Arrows scored two poles and a victory. The performance advantage of the Austrian team doesn't seem to be as decisive as expected.

Further development

It has to be said that Red Bull Racing is normally known for its disappointing overtures to the season. They usually develop the car in such a way that in the second half of the season the situation is much different. But will Red Bull develop the car now with the important rule changes of 2022 in mind?

Helmut Marko told Auto-motor-und-sport.de that he intends to do so: "Then we will see further depending on the position in the championship". Winning a world title is more important to Marko than how one potentially stands next year. "We can't do that to Max now that he has a car with which he can become world champion for the first time."

Mercedes

Toto Wolff already hinted at Imola that they need to focus entirely on the current season and not on 2022. This could potentially be good news for the chasing teams, who might be able to make a substantial development push to catch up with the top teams.
