"Disappointing day" for Ricciardo after dropping out in Q1
Daniel Ricciardo hasn't had the perfect start to his career at McLaren and in Portugal, the Australian had another "disappointing day". Whilst his teammate Lando Norris will be fighting towards the front of the grid, Ricciardo will be starting from 16th place.
For the first time since the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix, Ricciardo failed to escape from the opening session of qualifying.
Time lost
"That was certainly a bit of time in the last sector. It was messy. The first lap on the soft wasn't really assisted by a little bit of traffic but just a disappointing day. Q1 goes so quick. Yesterday was positive I would not have bet on this today," Ricciardo told Sky Sports after his early elimination.
McLaren are in a tough fight for the best of the rest position in the Championship. Ferrari will be their main rivals through the season, but the Alpine car also looks strong this weekend.
