Mercedes is using augmented reality to get a head start on Red Bull Racing, but the Austrian racing team is not sitting still either. The team of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez recently signed a multi-year contract with technology company Oracle. Thanks to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), Red Bull should be able to work more efficiently.

These two technologies are mainly used for data exchange. "These areas of technology are going to play a key role in our decision-making in the future, with the amount of data we generate. Especially with track time becoming less and less," Christian Horner is quoted by Motorsport.com.

Red Bull won't reveal anything

In what areas it helps Red Bull a lot, the team boss doesn't want to reveal. "We don't want to tell all our competitors exactly what we're doing, but data and the way we process it is our lifeblood. We just generate so much from it. It really affects everything, from the way we classify a race, the way we develop a car, even the way we choose drivers and analyse our drivers. It plays such an important role," he explains.

There are hundreds of calculations involved in strategy development during the race, but artificial intelligence can also play a role in tuning the car.

This weekend Red Bull will be aiming for victory in the Imola Grand Prix. With Verstappen and Perez in their ranks they will do everything they can to beat Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
