Uncertainty about GP of Canada: Mayor makes last attempt to government
- GPblog.com
From June 11 to 13 the Canadian Grand Prix is supposed to be held, but due to the strict coronavirus measures it seems that the GP will not be held this year either. The mayor of Montreal however makes a last appeal to the government.
In 2019, the Grand Prix of Canada was held for the last time at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. Indeed, in 2020 the GP in Canada was cancelled due to the coronavirus, and it could easily happen again for 2021. Due to the strict measures that remain in place in Canada, June seems to come too soon.
No Grand Prix in Canada?
However, this is not what the mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, had hoped for. She makes opposite La Presse a final appeal towards the government. ''For us, the arrival of Formula 1 is very important. We want to show all our partners that we consider this event very important. We want to organise it on the planned day. There are still a lot of details to sort out, but I really hope that our government partners will help us to make this event possible.''
For Formula 1 itself there seems little to worry if Canada is unable to host the race. After last year a lot of new circuits have been visited. Imola and Portimao have already been found willing to fill the gaps of China and Vietnam, and Turkey seems an excellent candidate to take over Canada's spot in June.
