Mercedes are in a battle with Red Bull Racing to win the world title in 2021. Even though the season is only one Grand Prix away, all the ingredients seem to be in place to make it a very exciting one. Mercedes is trying to stay ahead of its Austrian competitors by using augmented reality.

Thanks to this innovative technique the communication between the factory and the circuit could be further improved. This communication is important in order to achieve an even better correlation so that Mercedes can appear stronger on the grid. It could also further reduce costs and because of the introduction of the budget cap

Wolff explains benefit

"Formula 1 is a sport that travels all over the world. We also have our 'support room', where about thirty people are monitoring the car and working in the simulator and wind tunnel to improve performance on the track. We are analyzing high tech parts like hydraulic components of the power unit and gearboxes,” Wolff told Motorsport.com.

Thanks to augmented reality (better known to some as AR), Mercedes want to establish a live link between personnel in the factory and engineers on the track. How does this provide an advantage?

"In addition, the benefit is that working remotely, as we have all experienced over the last 12 months, helps us to reduce the carbon footprint. We are able to send fewer people to the track, as they have exactly the same opportunities from the factory to collaborate with the engineers as when they are on the track," the Austrian team boss said.
