Fernando Alonso makes his comeback in Formula 1 this season after two years of absence. The Spaniard is the second oldest driver on the grid this season, after Kimi Raikkonen. Questions about his age do surprise him though.

Age a big question

Speaking at the press conference in Bahrain, Alonso let it be known that he had not expected so much attention to be paid to his age (39, he turns 40 in July). "My age is a big question, but I'm a bit surprised by that," the two-time world champion told the press conference. "I'm not that old. The guy who dominates the sport is 36. I'm not twenty years older," he refers to Lewis Hamilton.

No guarantees

Earlier this week Alonso stated that he is better than the other drivers on the grid. At the press conference he nuanced his statements somewhat. "I hope so," he said. "There are no guarantees. You just have your own confidence, that you try to deliver what the team expects from you."

Alonso's preparation

His own preparation, at least, will not be the issue. "When I decided to return, I tried to focus on preparation, not only physically, but also technically by being with the team and trying to master the F1 language, which is a bit more technical than other categories."

"It always takes time and I'm not one hundred percent yet," Alonso said of his comeback. "It's the same for many people, I think. Some have changed teams, some just have to readapt to the new aerodynamic regulations and tyres. You always feel more comfortable after four, five, six races. I'm happy with where we are now, but after a few races I'll feel more comfortable."
