Fernando Alonso did not compete in Formula 1 in 2019 and 2020, but after a two-year absence, the 39-year-old driver is back. Alonso returns for Alpine and is convinced that he is still the best driver on the grid.

In an interview with the BBC, Alonso says that it is a good thing that there are more young talents driving in Formula 1 than ten years ago. The Spaniard is also impressed with the performance of most drivers in the lower classes.

Alonso still thinks he's among the best F1 drivers

It's not just drivers in their mid-twenties who are active in the premier class of motorsport. With Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel there are plenty of drivers who already have years of experience and a world title to their name. "Max Verstappen has also been at the top of his game for years, but he is still part of the younger generation."

With Alpine, Alonso will be aiming for third place in the constructors. Mercedes and Red Bull Racing seem out of reach, but beyond that: "It will be a challenge, but I am still better," he said refering to Hamilton, Vettel and Verstappen. Only in 2022, when the new regulations are introduced, will Alonso (possibly) be able to compete with the men at the front.
