Ho-Pin Tung believes Sergio Perez needs to improve his qualifying speed if he is to have a chance against Max Verstappen. The Chinese Dutchman believes it will be crucial for Red Bull Racing as a team to have a shot at the drivers' and constructors' world title. It will make it easier for Red Bull Racing to put the pressure on major rival Mercedes.

Tung would not be surprised if it turns out that Perez will be ahead of Verstappen a few times in 2021, although it will mainly depend on the circumstances according to the racing driver. "In normal circumstances Verstappen will just always be in front. Pérez did come out on top in last year's qualifying duel with Lance Stroll, but we all know Verstappen scored 17-0 against Alex Albon. Normally Verstappen is also faster over one lap than Pérez," he explained.

Strategic advantage important

The 38-year-old analyst at Formule1.com that speed on Saturday is the main area of improvement for Verstappen's new teammate. "At a top team, to finish at the front you also have to start at the front, also for the strategic advantage of being able to put pressure on Mercedes and possibly other cars," Tung said.

Perez's strength lies mainly on Sundays. The Mexican is very good with tyre management which can give a tactical advantage in the Grands Prix. However, a good starting position is required for this. Next weekend Perez will make his debut for Red Bull when the first GP of the season is held at the Bahrain International Circuit.
