Haas spoke to Renault in 2020: 'In every relationship you have some problems'

Haas will start the 2021 Formula One season with Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin as their two drivers. They are hopeful of a good engine from Ferrari, after it also looked at the possibilities of switching to Renault in 2020.
Conversation with Renault
Haas entered Formula 1 in 2016 and with a car largely bought over from Ferrari, the American team's start was above expectations. However, the team has been caught up in recent years, and problems with the Ferrari engine marked a new low in 2020.
That low point caused team boss Günther Steiner to look further afield. In conversation with Formula1.de Steiner confirmed that he had 'spoken to Cyril Abiteboul a number of times about their plans'. ''However, we never got to a point of negotiating. We looked at who was doing what and then we decided it was nothing for us'', said Steiner.
New Ferrari deal
For Haas, in fact, a new deal came their way. With the sponsor of Mazepin's father and the sponsorship of Mick Schumacher, Haas was able to bring in a lot of money. The deal with Schumacher was only possible through Ferrari, and so the two parties remained loyal to each other.
''We have a six-year relationship with Ferrari and it's still going very well. Of course, as in every relationship, there are sometimes problems, but we can always solve them'', concluded the Haas team boss, who already let it be known in 2020 that he considered loyalty towards Ferrari very important, because the Italian marque was there in the first place to make their debut in F1 possible.
