All the Formula 1 teams have now unveiled their cars for the upcoming season. Some of the teams have already been out on the track with their new cars during the so-called filming day, but Ferrari was the only team that were still in the dark. On Wednesday afternoon, they were the last team to officially present their car to the world: the Ferrari SF21! The car with which Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz should find a better connection to the top this year than last.

Difficult year

In 2019, an irregularity in the Ferrari engine was identified by the FIA that suddenly made the team not so competitive towards the end of the season. During the 2020 test days, it became clear that the FIA and Ferrari had resolved the issue - somewhat shrouded - behind closed doors. Whatever it was, it had its effect on 2020. Apart from a lack of power to keep up with Red Bull and Mercedes, Ferrari also lacked a good design.

This year the changes are limited, so Ferrari are already primarily focused on 2022. Nevertheless, they need to do better this year. Whether the developments on the car will be enough to bring Ferrari further forward remains to be seen. The team have already indicated that their expectations are not too high, but it is and remains Ferrari. Maybe they still have a trump card up their sleeve.

New drivers

Sebastian Vettel knew pretty quickly last year that 2020 would be his last season with Ferrari. The team preferred a younger duo and that is of course Charles Leclerc and for Vettel's place, Carlos Sainz was recruited. The Spaniard has been doing good business in the sport for years and with a much younger duo, Ferrari is trying to produce a new champion.

That will not be possible in 2021, but with a strong focus on 2022, all chances are open again. So 2021 will mainly be an interim year for the team and the drivers. What is clear is that they want to perform significantly better than in 2020. To do so, the team wants to use the SF21 that the Italian team has officially unveiled today. We will see this car in action this weekend in Bahrain when the test days take place.
