For a while Sergio Perez risked not having a Formula 1 seat for the 2021 season, but things turned out differently: At the last minute he was offered a contract at Red Bull Racing. An opportunity that he believes will open many doors in the future.

After the former Racing Point team traded him to Sebastian Vettel, despite Perez having a contract in his pocket, things didn't look too good for the Mexican. However, when he suddenly won a race and finished the season very well, a unique opportunity presented itself at Red Bull: Perez will be Max Verstappen's new teammate.

Hectic but motivated winter for Perez

However, it is still a one-year contract, something Perez is certainly aware of. "I see it as an opportunity to show my potential, with a top car at a top team," Perez said in conversation with Motorsport.com. "It's an opportunity that will definitely open a lot of doors, so we'll see what happens next. I have to make sure I do the same as I have done in the past: Making the most of every opportunity and performing to the maximum, and just enjoying it."

Perez also reveals that it has been a hectic winter, as he only signed his contract with Red Bull in December. However, his motivation is extremely high. "I've been working really hard on my fitness, to be ready as soon as possible. I've also spent a lot of time with the engineers at the factory, to be up to speed when we start the test in Bahrain," Perez said.
