Alexander Albon will have to watch from the side in 2021 and assess how Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez can drive in the RB16B races. For the British-Thai, he will remain at the team with a testing role this season, to hopefully be able to participate in Formula 1 again in 2022.

The past three years must have been a rollercoaster ride for Albon. In Formula 2 he took some victories and then went to Formula E. However, he would never start there because Helmut Marko needed him at Toro Rosso. Albon had no doubts and was even allowed to join Red Bull Racing after six months. A year and a half after that move, however, he is on the sidelines for the coming Formula 1 season.

The roller coaster ride from Albon

"Firstly, I was down on experience, it felt like during the year, together with my engineer, I became increasingly aware of what I had to do to get performance out of that car. That got better during the season, maybe some results didn't show that but the general path was improvement," Albon said during a press conference from Red Bull which was attended by GPblog.

"I won't be in the car as much this year, but I will be at the track so I can understand more from an engineering side of it how the team operate on an in-depth scale." It wasn't an easy car last year. If I could be more comfortable with it, my performance could've been stronger," he added.

Albon to another team?

Now Albon is on the sidelines, but for 2022 he will still aim for a place in Formula 1. At Red Bull and AlphaTauri, there may be a chance, but what if all four drivers do well? Then there may be no place at all within the Red Bull family. However, Albon does not want to think about that yet.

"We will have to see that. In the summer break, you usually understand how things are playing out, so until then, the full effort is with Red Bull," the reserve driver of Red Bull Racing concludes.
