It seemed like a matter of time before Lewis Hamilton's contract extension at Mercedes was announced, and earlier this week it finally happened. However, after the announcement, things remained quiet for days on Hamilton's side. The driver has since spoken out via his Instagram page.

Hamilton apologizes for absence

Meanwhile, speculation about the reason behind the silence was already rife on Hamilton's social media channels. He would not be completely satisfied with the outcome of the negotiations, including his salary.

On Friday evening, however, a post appeared on Hamilton's Instagram page, in which he apologized for his recent absence on social media.

"Hey guys, sorry I’ve been absent from here for a while," reads the text accompanying the post. "I’ve been focusing and preparing for the season ahead. I consider myself lucky to have had this time to reflect and prepare."

Message from Hamilton to his fans

Furthermore, he let it be known that he is looking forward to the upcoming Formula One season. "I remain positive and excited for the season ahead but want you all to know that I’m thinking of you out there, hoping you are well. I miss so many of you and can’t wait to hopefully see you again soon if not in person then online."

"But one thing is for sure: I’ll be racing my heart out for you this year!" Hamilton concluded.
