Luca de Meo is CEO of the Renault group and therefore also directs the Formula 1 branch, which are now working under the Alpine name. De Meo is remarkably modest about the ambitions for the coming year in Formula 1.

No big words

Where previously the French team often raised the bar on expectations, CEO De Meo sees 2021 as a transition year.

"What we expect from this year, a transition year is mainly brand awareness. A team that will regularly appear in the newspapers and on television."

Remarkable since Renault finally ended up on the podium again after many years, several times even. Since relatively little work is done on the cars, you can expect them to at least match these results this year.

Goals for 2022

De Meo wants to focus on 2022. The year in which the new regulations will come into force, which could change all current relationships. "Later in 2022 we expect to be on the podium regularly. With the potential to win a race," the big boss told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

In France, however, they will expect more from the team now that Fernando Alonso has rejoined this year. With the arrival of the Spaniard, the French followers will at least expect them to fight for the podium again, and win the midfield battle.
