McLaren Racing and Formula E have announced that they have signed an agreement giving McLaren Racing an option to participate in the Formula E World Championship for the 2022/2023 season.

Impact of Formula E

Formula E's Gen3 will start in 2022, the new rules that will take effect in the ninth season of Formula E. Formula E cars will be more powerful and lighter with faster loading times. “McLaren Racing securing an option to join the Formula E grid from Gen3 is testament to the ongoing impact of our sport," said Alejandro Agag, founder and president of Formula E.

"With some of the most famous names in motorsport already competing in Formula E, we are thrilled that McLaren Racing has decided to examine a potential entry to Formula E,” Agag continues.

Future competition platform

McLaren was already involved in Formula E as supplier of the Gen2 battery systems. "In the coming period the team wants to make the final decision to participate as a team. We’ve been closely observing Formula E for some time and monitoring the series’ progress and future direction," said Zak Brown of McLaren.

"The opportunity to take an option on an entry and the completion of the McLaren Applied supplier contract with the FIA at the end of Gen2, gives us the necessary time to decide if Formula E is right for McLaren as a future competition platform,” said Brown.

Jamie Reigle, Chief Executive Officer of Formula E, also welcomes the possible arrival of McLaren. “We are delighted that McLaren Racing, one of the most iconic names in motorsport, has secured an option to join Formula E. We now look forward to working with McLaren Racing to demonstrate the sporting and commercial potential of Formula E and devise ways to elevate the series to a new level, as part of their evaluation.”
