The sound of the Honda is something the engine manufacturer is known for. Already during the winter tests this caused a commotion because the engine seems to mumble at lower revs. That has everything to do with a clever technique from Honda.

Hybrid system

What makes the Honda engine so special is the fact that it continues to burn a little petrol when the pedal is released, Motorsport.com analyses. Although this increases fuel consumption, it does allow the hybrid system to generate more electricity. The extra power from the hybrid system can therefore be supplied for a longer time.

Another practicality in the Honda engine has to do with the exhaust fumes. Honda has moved the two exhaust pipes under the upper arm of the rear suspension to generate a small blow-off to increase the current extraction from the central diffuser extractor, contributing to a slight increase in downforce.

Engine Controversy

Following the controversy around the Ferrari engine in 2019, the FIA is keeping a close eye on the engines. However, there was nothing to be said about the Honda engine, so it can be said that Red Bull and Honda have developed a clever secret weapon and this will be one of the engine's strengths for 2021 as well.
