Alessandro Zanardi was seriously injured in a crash earlier this year. The Italian has been in hospital for a long time. This is because of serious complications and severe damage to his head. He also underwent several brain surgeries and was occasionally transferred from hospital to specialised rest home and back again. Now almost half a year later there is some good news to report.

Thumbs up

The Italian Corriere Della Sera reported that Zanardi was responding by making hand movements. In fact, he would be able to shake hands and raise his thumb in response to questions. The medium also reports that he can recognise his wife, who visits him every day. This implies that he is slowly but surely regaining his sight.

However, speaking is not possible because of a hole in his throat, which the doctors have made as a precaution should he have any relapses in his recovery. For the time being it seems to be slowly moving in the right direction and there is hope for the Italian. The doctors expect him to recover with a large part of his brain functions intact.
