For a long time there has been uncertainty about the future of Toto Wolff as team boss of Mercedes. The fact that he wants to do something else in the not too distant future is no longer a secret, but it looks as if this will not be the case in 2021.

"Yes, I will stay in Formula 1, also as team principle," says Wolff in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung. "We are more or less in agreement, but we have not yet managed to reach the finish line. That's because it's not about an employment contract, but in the broad sense it's a decision on how Daimler and I will work together in our company over the next few years."

Wolff in the Lauda role

Wolff thus emphasises his role as a shareholder in the Mercedes team. He therefore has every interest in finding a good successor if he does decide to quit as team boss. According to him, it is not easy to find a suitable person.

Any new team boss could be in for some challenge, because of his role as co-owner, Wolff will always look over his shoulder. "I will probably take on a role similar to that of Niki Lauda. He always got on everyone's nerves as chairman or CEO," he concludes jokingly.
