Max Verstappen has been driving for Red Bull Racing since mid-2016, but there hasn't really been a moment when he could challenge Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes for more than three Grand Prix in a row. According to his own words, the 23-year-old Dutchman is not frustrated about this, although of course he would have preferred it differently.

"No, I'm not frustrated about that. I have a lot of respect for what they have achieved," says Verstappen in an interview with Formula1.com. The fact that Hamilton has done better is no reason for jealousy either. "I’m not frustrated about Lewis in a Mercedes car. To be honest, 90 percent of the field could win in that car. Nothing against Lewis, he’s a great driver, but the car is so dominant."

Verstappen makes the best of it

Verstappen thus repeats what he called for earlier this season. However, he has to admit that Hamilton's performance is extremely consistent. "OK, maybe others wouldn’t be as dominant as Lewis is, but you accept the situation you are in and you just try to make the best of it. I’m not frustrated, I’m more focused on what can we do to try and beat them.”

Next year Red Bull will have another chance to get closer to Mercedes under the current regulations. In 2022 the new regulations will enter Formula 1. That moment will be decisive for how the Verstappen will fare in the coming years in the pinnacle of motorsport.
