Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman. All three are driving in Formula 2, are Ferrari-junior and hope for a place in Formula 1 in 2021. According to Mattia Binotto, the decision as to who can go to Haas will be made soon.
Formula 2 season finale
Schumacher, Ilott and Shwartzman are currently first, second and fifth in the championship with two rounds of the season to go. In theory, all three still have a chance to win the title, but Schumacher and Ilott are the two battling at the front.
Binotto already wants to make a choice between the three talents for that season finale. “I don’t think we will wait for the final race in Bahrain or for Abu Dhabi. I think it’s something we’ll decide within the next couple of weeks," said Binotto at Formula1.com.
Driving for Ferrari
With the announcement that Alfa Romeo will continue with the current drivers, there is actually only room for them at Haas. "As we said, there is no place for all of them", Binotto continues. "I think they are all doing well in F2 at the moment. They are all currently focused on the next race in Bahrain – they are challenging for the championship, which is very important for them.”
The Ferrari juniors will have another chance to test in Formula 1 in Abu Dhabi, but Ferrari does not want to wait with the choice. "We make our own decision and the decision will be done on how they've done so far, [how] they’ve developed – their potential.” Binotto therefore looks beyond next year for the Ferrari-talents. "Our objective is not to bring them into F1; it’s to bring them one day into Scuderia Ferrari - in the red cars - and whatever will be the path to achieve it, that’s less important.”
