Ferrari have taken a huge step backwards in terms of engine speed. Where they still had the fastest engine in 2019, they lagged behind enormously in 2020. Mattia Binotto and his team have worked hard to solve these problems and the team boss of the Italian team expects a strong comeback in 2021.

"We do not have the fastest engine at the moment, but next year we will probably get a completely new engine, according to the rules. We have invested a lot at Ferrari to further develop the engine for 2021 and 2022," explains Binotto at Formula1.com. "The engine is currently on the dyno and I think the feedback, around performance and reliability, is very positive.

Limits in 2021

It is important for Ferrari to develop the engine quickly now, because in 2021 there will be rules that will reduce the time it takes for teams to test their engine on the test bench. "Of course we have those dyno limits and it is up to us to make efficient use of them, such as scheduling testing on the dyno.

"We also need to be creative in the way we test. Even if we have a limit on what we can do, there is still room for improvement and I think we can look very positively at the results we can see so far of the new engine".

Honda are also going to renew

Ferrari are not the only team with a new engine for 2021, Honda are also planning to introduce a new engine for next year. "We still have seven races to go this year and next year we will have a new season where we are just going to do our best to win. We have a whole new bike that should help Red Bull Racing to win next year's championship," said Takahiro Hachigo, CEO of Honda at Crash.Net.
