Mercedes team boss Toto Wollf believes that Lance Stroll recieves unfair criticism for his place on the Formula 1 grid. Wolff believes Stroll deserves his place on the grid and pointed out his previous success.
Many people believe the Canadian only has a seat in Formula 1 because his wealthy father heads the consortium that own Racing Point.
He has been under pressure even more lately due to some incidents on track. He came into contact with other drivers twice last weekend in the first corner of Portimao. The first time was with Max Verstappen during the second free practice session, which was declared a racing incident. The second incident came during a clash with Lando Norris.
Toto Wolff refused to accept that the Canadian was in the pinnacle of motorsport through financial reasons and pointed out the Racing Point drivers achievements.
"Name me one driver who doesn't deserve it. Let's look at Lance, and I'm not prejudiced because I also think that every driver should earn his place. He has won the Italian F4 Championships and the European F3 Championships. He has also been on the podium twice and at Monza he has qualified in the rain on the first row of the grid. I don't think we can say that he doesn't deserve it just because his father is a billionaire."
Wolff continued: "I think he's suffering from that stigma. He can't help it that his father is so successful. I find it even more impressive that a child who comes from such an environment takes part in one of the most competitive sports on Earth. No, there is no discussion about it, " the team boss of Mercedes told Autosport.
