With the exception of Kimi Raikkonen, all drivers will be driving a Formula 1 car for the first time at the Imola circuit this weekend. And then there will only be one practice session before qualifying starts.

Interesting weekend

Because of the little time the drivers get on the track, Max Verstappen thinks it will not be easy to find the right set-up. "That could make it interesting, especially for the engineers.”

Verstappen sees more challenge in the fact that Imola is quite narrow and there are a lot of kerbs you have to take. "It’s going to be important to find a good compromise between top speed on the long straight and also having decent cornering to hit the kerbs well," according to the Dutchman.

Cool addition to the calendar

Verstappen still has some experience on the circuit. "I raced there in Formula 3 and really enjoyed it, especially coming through the field in the race.” He was able to work his way up from 11th to 2nd and is really looking forward to racing at the famous track again. "You need a decent amount of top speed as well as a good set-up but there are some overtaking opportunities. Of course F1 cars are harder to follow than F3 cars so overtaking won’t be easy but we’ll have to wait and see what is possible.”

So again, it will be important to get a good spot on the grid. "If we can get qualifying right then hopefully we won’t need to overtake too much. Overall I think it’s going to be a really cool addition to the calendar.”
