Just over a week ago Williams got a new owner and for the first time the team is no longer in the hands of the Williams family. Immediately there was speculation about the position of Claire Williams and if it could be maintained. Today we received clarity, as Claire will retire after the Italian Grand Prix.

When Williams Racing was taken over by the investors of Dorilton Capital, it was already taken into account that Claire Williams could eventually be replaced. The question was really only when it could happen. So Dorilton and Williams are taking over and Sir Frank's daughter has to make way after the Italian Grand Prix.

Difficult decision

"It is with a heavy heart that I am stepping away from my role with the team. I had hoped to continue my tenure long into the future and to preserve the Williams family's legacy into the next generation. However, our need to find inward investment earlier this year due to a number of factors, many of which were outside of our control, resulted in the sale of the team to Dorilton Capital."

"I have taken the decision to step away from the team in order to allow Dorilton a fresh start as the new owners. It has not been an easy decision but it's one I believe to be right for all involved", Claire's first statement says.

End of an era

Claire's retirement goes hand in hand with the complete withdrawal of the Williams family from the team. Sir Frank, who officially was still the team boss, will therefore give up his position.
