Formula 1 wants to abolish qualifying mode from the Belgian Grand Prix, but what's the point? Christijan Albers says that abolishing this mode is 'absolute nonsense'.

Mercedes even stronger

''Adjusting the engine management has nothing to do with gray areas, but in Formula 1 they're just in panic mode because Mercedes is too omnipotent. If you look at the GP of Spain, then perhaps they were even more powerful than in the previous races", says Albers in the podcast of De Telegraaf.

''Abolishing that mode is absolute nonsense. You want to race at maximum power with Formula 1, don't you? That qualifying mode has been around for 30, 40 or maybe 50 years and now it suddenly has to go? Every power source has a little extra, so optically it will stay the same. The gap on Saturday only seems bigger now because everything from the car will come together in one lap''.

Formula 1 is not boring

In addition to qualifying mode, Formula 1 is also considering fixing the amount of downforce from 2021, in order to be able to limit Mercedes even more. Liberty Media will of course want to sell their sport as nicely as possible, but you wonder if this doesn't go against the DNA of the sport?

''At some point you have to leave the rules alone, because we are just racing. There are always people who find Formula 1 boring, but it's fun. It's not just about that car on the track, it's about the whole team delivering a top performance. Ajax players aren't going to wear a backpack with 50 kilograms because they are too good,'' the former Formula 1 driver concludes.
